Theme Songs...
Oh man… This is a hard one.
I prefer to have a soundtrack of life. Let’s start at the very beginning. (Yes, that was a Sound of Music reference, because who doesn’t LOVE a musical?)
The Beach Boys, Endless Summer & Pet Sounds, are staples of my soundtrack. In my early years: car rides with my parents, ski trips, and beach vacations. These lovely gentlemen were also my FIRST CONCERT complete with John Stamos...who I saw recently, and I forgot I didn't have sunglasses OR a mask on and shamelessly stared at through my windshield. (We made eye contact and I think I made him nervous that I was a crazed fangirl. But really, all I could think of was watching him jam with the Beach Boys in the summer of ‘86… so maybe he was right. My apologies to the Stamos family.) ANYWAY...Fast forward to high school... Mary’s mom and stepdad took us to: YES! YOU GUESSED IT, a Beach Boys concert! We were teenagers and Mary was probably more into checking out boys, while I was elbowing senior citizens trying to get as close to the stage as possible.
When Mary and I first met, her favorite artist was Paula Abdul. She knew the moves, had the hair and taught me all of it! She had older siblings who were much older than us, (High school and college age) and really were huge musical influences on us both. They introduced us to Mary J Blige, Steve Miller Band, Black Crows, Beastie Boys, Fugazi and so many more. OMG. World was rocked.
Through the years, Mary & I went to live shows of all different genres, we loved it all and were total late 90’s raver kids. We have seen Aerosmith, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers and Dave Matthews MULTIPLE times, Kiss (that was interesting!), Ani Difranco, Tori Amos… literally anything we could get to... even N*SYNC!
As we started going to bars, we came armed with a pocket full of quarters and sought out the ones with JukeBoxes. From sing-alongs to rock ballads, we played it all. Our apologies to anyone who hung out with us from 2001-2004. Although we still do this when we are together… So let's just make that a general apology.
Music is just SO GREAT. It’s a mood, a vibe, a feeling, a transporter to another time and place. It brings us together, reminds us of who we were & who we are.
Maybe we do have a song… It’s that one we sing at the top of our lungs at 3am when we haven’t seen each other in months, have a good cry and call it a night.
